Changing school boundaries
Chesterfield is a wonderful place for children to learn and grow. Families continue
to choose Chesterfield County in part because of the public school system, which is consistently cited by SchoolMatch as having what parents want. Recognizing Chesterfield’s appeal, America’s Promise Alliance has named Chesterfield County one of the country’s 100 Best Communities for Young People for two years in a row. Top-notch school divisions attract students, and the Chesterfield school system has grown by about 1,000 students each year since 2001. Additional students require additional schools, and attendance boundaries must be redrawn every time a new school opens.
In the fall of 2008, two new middle schools are scheduled to open to help relieve crowding. These two schools are part of the bond referendum approved by voters in 2004. Construction contracts have been signed and work has begun. The same design plans will be used for both schools, which are scheduled to open in September 2008.
● One of the new schools is Elizabeth Davis Middle, located next to Elizabeth Scott Elementary near the intersection of Route 10 and Interstate 295 in the Bermuda District. This school, which will cost about $38 million, may affect school boundaries for Carver Middle, Chester Middle and Salem Middle.
● The other new school is Tomahawk Creek Middle, located west of Route 288 and north of Old Hundred Road in the Matoaca District. This school, which will cost about $39 million, may affect school boundaries for Swift Creek Middle, Midlothian Middle and Bailey Bridge Middle.
Members of the redistricting committees appreciate your interest in the committees’ work. Observers are always welcome at committee meetings but are asked not participate in discussions and deliberations during the meetings. Instead, please
e-mail your comments to the committee at ccpsinfo@ccpsnet.net.
Both redistricting committees met 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Lloyd C. Bird High on these dates: Oct. 2, Oct. 16, Nov. 1, Nov. 13, Nov. 29 and Dec. 13 (Chesterfield Tech Center). The Elizabeth Davis Middle committee presented its recommendations to the School Board at 7 p.m. Jan. 22 in the public meeting room, 10001 Iron Bridge Road. The Tomahawk Creek Middle committee presented its recommendations to the School Board at 7 p.m. Feb. 12 in the public meeting room. After the recommendations are presented, notices will be sent to families in schools affected by the recommended boundary changes. Additional steps in the redistricting process include
● a public hearing on the proposed boundary changes
● adoption of new middle school boundaries by the School Board
● notices to families who are affected by the boundary changes
● new middle school boundaries taking effect when the two schools open in September 2008

New Elementary Schools
Chesterfield County Public Schools is consistently cited by SchoolMatch as one of the top school districts in the country that has what parents want. Top-notch school divisions attract students, and the Chesterfield school system has grown by about 1,000 students each year since 2001. Additional students require additional schools, and attendance boundaries must be redrawn every time a new school opens.
Two new elementary schools are scheduled to open during the 2007-08 school year. To make the transition as easy as possible for the students, children will start classes on the first day of school with the same classmates and teacher as they will have at Winterpock and Elizabeth Scott elementary schools.
- Until Winterpock opens, students zoned to attend the school will be housed in trailers and classrooms at Spring Run Elementary.
- Until Elizabeth Scott opens, students in grades K -2 will be housed at the Enon Annex and students in grades 3-5 will be housed in trailers at Marguerite Christian Elementary in trailers.
These two schools are part of the bond referendum approved by voters in 2004. Construction contracts have been signed and work has begun; the cost of each school will be about $20 million.
Boundary changes were approved by the School Board as presented at the 2/27 board meeting.
